Different Energy Sources

Different energy sources supply us with the power we require to live and work. These include wind, solar geothermal, biomass, and geothermal sources. In addition to being a major source of electricity they are also used for transportation and heating. These energy sources can emit greenhouse gases when burned to produce electricity. This results in the need for more sustainable energy sources.

Fossil fuels are the most widely used type of energy. They include oil, coal and natural gas. They were created thousands of years ago when prehistoric animals and plants died and were buried beneath layers of sedimentary rocks. In the appropriate conditions, they gradually converted to carbon-rich substances that, when burned produce energy. These fossil fuels will not be renewable as they will become depleted by the time we reach our age, or in many years.

Renewable energy sources are continuously replenished. The most important renewable energy source is sunlight, which supplies light and heat. We use it to power our homes and businesses, as well as to drive our vehicles. Wind is an energy source renewable that generates electricity through spinning turbines. We have been using it since the first discovered how to harvest the wind for millennia. We utilize biological processes to produce the ethanol (a clear, alcohol-like substance that can be used as fuel) from crops and waste.

Hydropower is the main renewable energy source in America, but wind and biofuels will soon take over. Hydropower relies on nature’s water cycle to harness the power of rapid-flowing water, which is used in turn to generate electricity.
